Flute Construction

| Ghost Owl flutes are made completely by hand. Very few power tools are used in their construction. As such each flute acquires its own personality and voice. You can follow along below as a Ghost Owl Flute is created. |

Blanks are cut on a saw to form the two halves of the flute body. |
| The halves are then routed to form the slow air and sound chambers. This is the only other step performed with machinery. | ![]() |

The Slow air hole, Fipple, and Sound holes are precisely cut in place while the halves are separated. |
| The halves are then glued together and clamped in place to form a complete seal and tight seam. | ![]() |

Once the glue is dry, the corners of the body are knocked off with a spoke shave to give form to the flute. |
| After the flute body has taken form, the body is sanded, and sanded, to complete the forming of the barrel. | ![]() |

The flute is now tuned note by note with an electronic tuner, to within 10%. |
| At this time, if any wood burnings are desired on the flute body, they are burned in. | ![]() |

The finish is applied to the flute body. When Tung oil is used, the inside of the sound chamber and the slow air chamber are coated to guard against moisture. If a varnish finish is desired, the outside of the body is finished, then the inside is coated with tung oil to guard against moisture. |
| Once the finish has dried, the chosen Fetish is mated to the body and held in place with deer hide straps. | ![]() |

A final tuning is done to bring the flute to within under +/- 10%. |
| The 'Key Signature' and Ghost Owl insignia are burned into the underside of each flute. | ![]() |
